A picture paints a thousands words , but what does a youtube video do?
I have had the privilege of working in futon industry for over 20 years. In this time I have experienced the paradigm shift from retail to online shopping. I used to have a shop , which made it easy for me to demonstrate the benefits of our products , however as time went on footfall began dry up and I noticed a lot more people were shopping online. So in 2005 I decided to take the business online. Although it has enabled us to reach out to more customers all over the UK , it comes with a major drawback of not being able to demonstrate the functionality of the products while building relations with our customers.
On the way back from a customer house me and my son were having a discussion on how we could have a big impact on our online customers. Then I had a eureka moment , if we did videos that showed features and functionality of our products then this would enable us to build relationships with online customers. At this moment we were the first futon company to use youtube to connect with our customers. This created a lot of issues as we had figure out how to produce the videos. However me and my two sons were able to assemble a set that consisted of two white walls and began to shoot the videos on the Sony family camera. After a montage of outtakes we finally managed to film , edit and upload the videos to youtube.
The videos have had such a positive impact on the business mainly because it has given funky futon an identity. This is essential in the online market because people buy from people and if you don't have a face to represent the business then customers might be skeptical about parting with their hard earned money. Furthermore the videos have aided our new customers on how to use our products but also it gives them a visual representation on how the sofa may look in their living space. We could tell our videos have been popular with our customers as we have gained just under half a million views. Furthermore when we personally deliver products some customers will ask who is the guy in the videos or when they visit our factory showroom, they will recognise me as the man from the videos.
Looking into the future we are looking to improve the quality of our videos. We want to provide customers with more informative videos , furthermore we want to give you , the customer a more in depth view into our daily workings at our factory so you can observe how we manage to manufacture quality futons in the UK. Overall the videos have surpassed all my expectations as its given us the opportunity to connect and add value to all new customers. Plus it's given us an identity which can be often lost when you shift from retail to online
